2025.08 Intel has introduced the Arrow Lake CPU generation. The Intel Core Ultra 7 265k is an ideal CPU to bring the video editing PC into the next generation.
The CPU manufacturer Intel has launched the 15th generation of its CPU series on the market. Now also with the fine 7 nanometer production technology. We like this very much and are therefore continuing the 4k-8k video editing PC on the 2025 model, the performance of the new models is again remarkable.
Energy consumption is a new aspect in this consideration. An important topic at the moment, especially when PCs have long runtimes for rendering.
The implemented energy efficiency, and thus the reduced power consumption, leads to significantly lower temperatures at the CPU under load and thus also to significantly less fan noise and quieter PCs overall.
Excellent performance
The Intel Arrow Lake CPU architecture provides excellent performance. It is really fun to edit films in post-production and we have never put together such a quiet video editing PC.
The graphics card prices are currently at a high but still affordable level, but you can still start with the onboard graphics in the CPU to check whether the performance already covers the requirements. An additional graphics card can be added later if necessary. Overall, the Intel Core Ultra 7 platform has excellent performance reserves for high-performance video editing. We will show you which components work well together in our build proposal.
The Tonfilmer construction proposal is of course suitable for WINDOWS 11.

Display: Would you rather have your own graphics card? The NVidia RTX is an excellent choice for video editing and top in terms of price/performance. The nVidia RTX 5060 Ti or 5070 Ti is now on the market and is now available at a fair price

Ready-made PC, self-build or notebook?
At the beginning of the research it quickly becomes clear that it won’t be easy to buy off-the-shelf, something usually never fits with pre-configured PC systems from the electronics trade. For one thing, complete systems often have too little RAM memory, the processor is not sufficiently future-proof or the systems are priced so high that an investment is difficult or not feasible. Let’s try to put together a coordinated, powerful and affordable basic system for video editing. If you don’t want to build your own, we have looked for a suitable pre-configured system for you.
No time to build it yourself? Then take a look here…

What is the current situation with video editing on the notebook?
The fact that the fastest hardware is just good enough for ambitious video editing is nothing new. Desktop systems can now handle 4K or 8K video editing very well, while mobile systems continue to lag far behind desktop systems in terms of performance. The screen size of a notebook is also often not large enough to display video editing programs. This means that viewing the timeline and the required tool windows is not possible or only possible to a very limited extent. Proxy editing is also no real help in this context, and no, in our opinion notebooks are simply not an option as a desktop replacement for 4k/8k video editing! And with a view to 8k video, it will stay that way.
Everything must fit together
It is important that the components fit together well so that no interference, such as beeping or humming during audio recordings, creeps in. All parts of this configuration suggestion are therefore hand-picked and, in our opinion, very well suited for this purpose. To date, we are aware of more than 2000 replicas of the Tonfilmer video editing construction suggestions, which fulfill their task without any problems. We think this is a great result. Thank you for your feedback.
Assemble a video editing PC
So let’s take a closer look at the requirements:
A high-performance system is therefore required to cope with the large amounts of data in 4k video. With 6k or 8k video, the demands on computing power increase considerably again. The performance requirements for photo editing are almost negligible.
- Editing videos with 4K resolution or more
- Multi-track capability
- Editing of audio material, sound studio function
- Creation of broadcast-ready material
- Editing of photos and graphics
- Very quiet system
Professional 3D modeling is also excellent with the building proposal!
3D modeling with the building proposal
If the additional graphics card is installed, the building proposal can also be used perfectly for professional 3D modeling. We have tried this with Rhino 3D, FreeCAD, AutoCAD and Fusion360 and are absolutely delighted with the performance.

Everything changes
In addition, modified components are required for high-resolution videos. In particular, this includes a monitor connection on the graphics card, which routes the signals to the monitor at a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Displayport from V1.2 is a good choice here, as this type is widely used. HDMI supports a refresh rate of 60 Hz from version 2.0.
You therefore need a corresponding monitor with 60 Hz Displayport V1.2 or higher or HDMI 2.0. Ideally, both variants should be supported by the monitor.
It is a good idea to choose a panel with IPS technology. This is state of the art, displays colors realistically and has a good viewing angle stability.
We have had good experiences with the 4K UHD monitor from Display: DELL.
8K monitors are currently still very expensive. In addition, the new Displayport 2.0 is required for 8K resolution with 60 Hz and full color gamut with 10-bit color depth. It therefore makes sense to choose a monitor with 4k resolution. However, in order to be prepared for the future, we pay attention to high performance for up to 8k video in other components.
But let’s get started…
The processor
A very fast processor is a must. The CPU is basically responsible for calculating the video. The images, the compression via codec with the computationally intensive rendering, all a task of the CPU. The Intel Core Ultra 7 is a 20-core processor with the new LGA1851 socket, which has a maximum speed of 5.50 GHz in turbo mode. The K models also have a free multiplier and Hyper-Threading technology. This means that a total of 20 CPU cores and 20 threads are available for calculations.

The new display: Intel Core Ultra 7 delivers computing power that previous Intel CPUs only achieved with an i9 CPU.

The Intel Core Ultra 7 265k currently belongs to the league of the most powerful processors and is therefore ideally suited for our UHD video project and a price/performance tip.
The Intel Core Ultra 7 CPU also remains inconspicuous in terms of waste heat and the workspace does not heat up. This also has a positive effect on the electricity bill. If you are in the fortunate position of having more budget, you can also consider the Intel Core Ultra 9 285k processor in this configuration.

The processor cooler
A cooler is again not included with the Core Ultra 7. This is a good thing, because a cooler supplied is usually not a performance miracle. To be more precise, these cool down the processor more badly than well, but rotate relatively high at 3000 rpm and are therefore also too audible.
A finned cooler with heatpipes brings a significant improvement here. The Noctua cooler has an excellent cooling performance, is practically inaudible and can often be regulated in the fan speed by PWM control. All in all, a finned cooler is a sensible option and therefore highly recommended if quiet systems are required.
Top cooling performance even under continuous load
New in this configuration is the Noctua NH-U12A chromax.black CPU cooler. This is a high-end product and a really good choice and one of the first high-end coolers for the new LGA1851 socket. It is not quite cheap, but has been developed for very high performance and is suitable for continuous load and overclocking. Superb workmanship and excellent cooling performance. The “Noctua NH-U12A chromax.Black” is relatively large, but fits well into the case. The cooler is of course absolutely noise-optimized and practically inaudible. A second fan is already attached to the heat sink. It also has a back plate and is therefore securely attached to the mainboard. Installation is very simple, well described and can be carried out without specialist knowledge.
A mainboard – with DDR5 support
The ASUS TUF Gaming Z890-PLUS WiFi motherboard offers an excellent platform for video editing and audio processing.
The boards are very well equipped and support all current standards, including Wifi 7 and PCI-Express 5.0. The m.2 slots for the NVMe SSD storage are excellently implemented. All slots are equipped with a quick lock and a heat sink. Very good!
The mainboards are also protected against heat, corrosion, power fluctuations and short circuits. It is also suitable for the new DDR5 RAM memory standard.

Tip:
The boards are ideally suited for video and audio recordings and cut a very good figure when it comes to shielding sensitive components from interference radiation.
The boards have a Displayport with 60 Hz and can therefore transmit 4K image signals to the monitor very well – without an additional graphics card. They also feature the new PCI-Express 5.0 and 4.0 transfer standard and four m.2 SSD slots with heat sinks. This is excellent and allows up to four PCIe NVMe m.2 SSDs to be used for a high-performance storage workflow.
The motherboards have the Gigabyte Q-Flash BIOS update function or, in the case of ASUS, the Crashfree update function. So if something goes wrong with the BIOS update or an update is pending without an installed CPU, a current BIOS can be installed via the USB port. Ingenious.
Audio
If you want the sound to be perfect, then an external audio interface is a good idea. The following are recommended: PreSonus, Focusrite or Steinberg. For around 150€, you are covered.
If you want to use 5.1 surround sound for your own videos, you should take a look at the Display: Soundblaster X. The card delivers excellent audio quality and can be easily calibrated with an appropriate speaker system.
The DDR5 RAM memory
Fortunately, the prices for main memory have fallen again somewhat. For video editing, 32GB is a very good size, 64GB is optimal. The high-performance memory display: Micron Crucial DDR5 is very interesting in terms of price-performance ratio. The good performance and above all the perfect stability speak for the product and it is a good choice for OC (overclocking). The low design allows a large processor cooler to be installed. A heat sink is integrated so that heat dissipation works very well.
The memory is also highly compatible and runs absolutely stably with the components mentioned.
The DDR5 memory is explicitly approved for the Asus board by the manufacturer Micron Crucial.
Important: It must be the RAM memory for Intel XMP! The Micron Crucial DDR5 memory supports both Intel XMP and AMD EXPO.
A graphics card or the GPU in the processor?
It’s worth a try. The new graphics core in the Intel Core processor is optimized for decoding Ultra HD 4k video, we will test it. Intel has long supported the GPU decoding (graphics processing unit) of the HEVC/H.265 codec for Ultra HD video.
The graphics chips of the Intel Core CPUs use the hardware acceleration in the processor. When decoding 4K material, H.265, with four times the amount of data, is definitely good for significantly reducing the load on the processor through this hardware acceleration.
If I want to operate several 4K monitors, I quickly need an additional graphics card. These now usually have 2x Diplayport 1.4 (or higher) and 2x HDMI 2.0 (or higher) built in. The graphics card must also support OpenCL or CUDA. As I also use several monitors myself, I have now installed an additional graphics card.
The nVidia RTX 5060 Ti or RTX 5070 Ti is now on the market and is now available at a fair price. More…

All data has to go somewhere – the SSD
At this point, there is an important change in the video editing PC. The SSD for the operating system is an NVMe M.2 SSD with PCIe bus 4.0 (this is important, please do not use an m.2 PCIe bus with SATA mode and also pay attention to the read/write speeds). You should also pay attention to the storage size; 2TB is a good size. This NVMe m.2 SSD provides another performance boost and is used on the first of the four m.2 ports on the motherboard.

A standard SATA hard drive is no longer available for processing in the system, but there is a 12TB external storage and data backup option. An external storage or two for security, is also very well suited for this purpose.

A power supply unit
Powerful systems require powerful power supplies. This is especially true if the latest graphics cards are to be used in video editing PCs. Therefore, the power supply’s performance must be matched to the graphics card. It makes sense to ensure that the new ATX 3.0 standard is supported. This also includes the new PCIe 5.0 – 12VHPWR graphics card connector. With an output of 850W, the MSI MPG A850G PCIE5 ATX3.0 power supply provides sufficient reserves. The power supply stays nice and cool, makes no fan noise, and is attractively priced. Ideal for quiet environments.
The power supply also has cable management, so only the necessary cables can be plugged into the power supply, ensuring a tidier case.

The tower case
A tower case that is painted on the inside, has slots for SSDs and allows for a bottom-mounted power supply with its own ventilation circuit, has USB3 front ports and allows the side panels on the left and right to be removed would be ideal. In addition, there must be sufficient volume inside and space for several case fans to dissipate the waste heat effectively. It also makes sense to use two high-quality 140mm PWM (4-pin connector) fans on the front.
The Corsair case is a good choice. It is a top-of-the-line case with a new design and many detailed improvements. It is also well-made and meets the requirements excellently. Available in white or black.
Very important: space for fresh air!

So? How does it feel?
OK, it’s certainly no surprise. We’ve learned that to edit 4K or higher, we need a lot of computing power above all else. With this system, you can easily edit material on multiple tracks and add effects. Fast rendering and exporting also work excellently. The integrated graphics GPU handles the 4K stream with ease and is definitely an option for keeping costs down at the beginning.
With this basic system, I can meet the requirements very well.
The update with the Intel Core Ultra 7 processor and the m.2 SSD with PCIe 4.0 brings another enormous and noticeable performance gain. The increase in computing power is very high in comparison and now plays in the league of previous i9 CPUs according to benchmarks.

Successful load test
In post-production, we like to work with Resolve from Blackmagic, which provides a professional editing program as well as a number of other tools. The RAW Speed load test checks whether the PC system is powerful enough for resolutions up to 8K. In the “Will it Work” table section, performance tests that have been passed are marked with a green check mark. The Tonfilmer Bauvorschlag passed all load tests without any problems.
Genuine 64-bit editing software is also very helpful for demanding video editing tasks.

FAQ – Here are the most frequently asked questions:
Question: Is the Tonfilmer construction proposal suitable for Windows 11?
Answer: Yes, the build proposal naturally supports Windows 11.
Question: Which processor do I actually need for what?
Answer: This can be roughly divided into the following categories:
Intel® Core™ Ultra 5 processors for mid-range performance;
Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 processors for high-level performance;
Intel® Core™ Ultra 9 processors for the highest level of performance.
With the Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 processor or its predecessor, you’re well equipped for video editing.
Question: Is the onboard graphics card sufficient for 4K video?
Answer: Yes, this works quite well initially and is definitely an option for getting started with video editing. If you want to use multiple 4K monitors, you will need an additional graphics card. A better graphics card is really useful. If you want to do serious video editing, there’s no way around it. In particular, the preview in the timeline tends to stutter with onboard graphics. A better additional graphics card can help. We have had good experiences with nVidia cards from RTX 5060 Ti or 5070 Ti onwards.
Question: I want an additional graphics card, but which one?
Answer: That’s a difficult question. First, I recommend checking whether the manufacturer of your editing software provides a list of supported or recommended graphics cards. If not, the card should support the OpenCL or CUDA standards. In addition, cards with 6 GB GDDR5/6 memory and sufficient interfaces (2x Display Port V1.2, 2x HDMI 2.0 or newer) are recommended. Furthermore, up to 4 monitors can be operated simultaneously. We have had good experiences with nVidia cards from RTX 5060 Ti onwards.
Question: I have great respect for the assembly of the components. Can I do it as a normal user?
Answer: It is necessary to know what you are doing. However, it is not rocket science, especially if the components, as in our video editing PC recommendation, have already been selected and are known to be suitable. But you do need to familiarize yourself with the technology to some extent.
Question: Asus EZ Flash BIOS – Why is it so awesome?
Answer: That’s right. If something went wrong during a BIOS update and the motherboard was no longer responsive, it used to be a case for the scrap heap. With EZ-Flash, an update can be easily installed via USB stick in the event of an error. This can also be helpful when changing CPUs, provided that the new CPU is not yet recognized by the motherboard.
Question: Are there any points that are often done incorrectly during assembly or that need to be taken into account?
Answer: Yes, there are indeed. I have quite a lively exchange with people who have replicated the video PC. In the process, a number of questions have repeatedly come up, which have been emailed to me by “occasional PC builders.” The problems can be minimized if the motherboard manual is followed carefully. I’ll list the most common pitfalls here:
Pitfalls in video editing on a PC
Are the RAM memory modules in the correct slots?
The motherboard manual describes exactly which slots must be used for the RAM memory modules. If I use 4 modules, I have no problem. If I use 2 modules, the slots must be assigned according to the manual.
It doesn’t work with Windows 7
To get the best performance out of the system, you need the latest drivers and software. Unfortunately, Windows 7 is not compatible as an operating system. Windows 11 works great.
Current drivers
Current drivers for the chipset and graphics unit are essential. The drivers included in Windows are usually not sufficient for smooth video editing (except for manufacturer drivers). This point must be checked in any case.
